Synthetic Phonics Teaching with Jolly Phonics was a workshop conducted by Mrs.Disha Kawa at school on the 2nd and 3rd of July. Mrs.Disha Kawa is a UK certified Jolly Phonics instructor/trainer for India Region. The commitment she displayed in handing down the training distinguished her as a professional who understood and knew what she is doing when it came to training the teachers in Jolly phonics. The workshop was attended by 34 Teachers of the Tapti Valley International School and Tapti Kids. The workshop spelled out the importance of Jolly Phonics with a UK based curriculum. Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics.
The teachers learnt the actions for each of the 42 letter sounds; the popular multi-sensory method was very motivating for them. The training enabled the teachers to learn the technique of teaching children to begin building words as early as possible. As Jolly Phonics works using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing. This programme conducted at school imparted the way of teaching essential grammar, spelling and punctuation skills to the students. The five skills taught in Jolly Phonics were -First: learning the letter sounds, second: learning letter formation using different multi-sensory methods, third: blending, fourth: identifying the sounds in words (Segmenting), Fifth: tricky words which have irregular spellings and children learn these separately. The workshop proved to be beneficial for the teachers as they found it to be a great course with an abundance of ideas for active methodology. Mrs. Kawa presented information surrounding the five basic skills along with helpful teacher activities and an overview of Jolly materials and resources. The teachers were excited and felt confident to begin using Jolly Phonics in their classes and in their schools.
Jolly Phonics worked magic not only for me, but also for the teachers and students in our school. Kudos to Disha Kawa for such a power packed Jolly Phonics school training workshop. My teachers were enlightened with the jolly methodology of teaching children to read and write. From the sounds to the actions to the spelling rules and activities, I have never seen my teachers more enriched and elated after training workshop. I am so thankful to Disha for introducing us to the joys of teaching using Jolly Phonics.
"Better than a 100 days of diligent learning is 1 day with a great teacher." When my child joined Phonicsounds little did I know that my son will develop such a strong base of the sounds that reading and spelling will become a passion for him. Phonicsounds has indeed shown that kids can not only learn spellings by fun but also grammar and creative writing can be made equally exciting, absorbing and invigorating for them.
Disha Kawa is an extremely knowledgeable, hardworking, committed Trainer.
